The open source game engine Godot recently made a blogpost stating that AI-authored code contributions to the engine will result in a permanent ban from their Github repository. The Godot team has recently experienced a surge in AI-generated contributions, leading to a lot of time being spent reviewing unusable code, that could have otherwise been spent elsewhere.

Contributing code to Godot isn’t always a one-and-done task, as it often requires the contributor to maintain the code down the road. AI-generated code is problematic in the sense that, even if it works – If the contributor can’t understand it, maintaining it in the future becomes a struggle.

AI cannot take responsibility, and we can’t trust heavy users of AI to understand their code enough to fix it.

As the engine is open source, anyone is free to contribute code to it. Most of these contributions never get pushed to the main branch – the engine you actually download – though, as the standards are quite high. The ban of AI-authored code is another step in keeping these standards in check.
